I Can’t Stop Watching the Trailer for ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’

Whewwwww. That's me wiping the sweat off my forehead after watching the official trailer for HBO's new sketch comedy series, A Black Lady Sketch Show.

I only watched the first few seconds of the trailer before Saweetie's "My Type," which ABLSS proudly dubbed the "Song of the Summer," started playing. I knew right then that this show would be a must-watch. Then, it gets even better. Megan Thee Stallion's "Hot Girl" plays over a preview of the all-too-relatable sketches to come. Arguing with an uncle over who gets to deliver the prayer before a meal? I feel seen. In another scene, Angela Bassett and Laverne Cox lead the conversation in a "Bad Bitch Support Group," and then we learn what a "Flintstone dick" is ("You have to use your feet to make it work," a couple of friends say in unison, just in case you were wondering).

I'm not used to seeing so many black women in a comedy sketch show, and A Black Lady Sketch Show did not come to play. Not only is it written and directed by Robin Thede (and executive produced by Issa Rae), it also puts four black women front and center: Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis, and Quinta Brunson. The stars who will make an appearance in the season include Tia Mowry, Lena Waithe, Yvonne Orji, Marsai Martin, Lil Rel Howery, and Kelly Rowland.

"I created 'A Black Lady Sketch Show' because I love how many insanely funny black women are grinding in these comedy streets," Thede tweeted back in January when she announced the show. "It’s time the WORLD recognizes. This show is going to be epic and @IssaRae & I are so honored to be bringing this project to @HBO!"

A Black Lady Sketch Show premieres on August 2 at 11 P.M. on HBO.
