Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg has finally hit 100 million subscribers.
Though he lost the battle to be the first channel to hit the milestone to Indian music channel T-Series, last night he finally crossed the threshold himself, becoming the first solo creator to do so.
To put that into perspective, there's no-one else even close to this achievement; as Forbes points out, 5-Minutes Crafts is the closest with 60 million subs.
Despite a publicly fractious relationship, even YouTube took time to celebrate. "Married to marziapie. Revived our love of Minecraft. Reached 100 million subscribers on YouTube. What a month to celebrate and congratulate PewDiePie," said a tweet on the platform's official Twitter account.
PewDiePie's rise to fame hasn't been without controversy. Disney's Maker Studios dropped him following Nazi jokes and anti-Semitic slurs in February 2017, and then another incident – this time involving a racial slur – prompted Firewatch developer Sean Vanaman to file a DMCA takedown of PewDiePie's Firewatch content, saying: "He's worse than a closeted racist: he's a propagator of despicable garbage that does real damage to the culture around this industry."
In 2018 PewDiePie promised he'd delete his channel if he hit 50 million subs, and then trolled the internet at large by instead deleting his second channel, Jacksepticeye2, which only had two videos.
PewDiePie has recently been re-focussing his content on Minecraft as the series celebrates its tenth anniversary.
