Demi Lovato decided not to let the internet have the final word on whether or not she “threw shade” at Taylor Swift with her MTV VMAs Instagram Story last night. Swift’s fans became convinced that Lovato took a jab at Swift when Lovato wrote, “I skipped the MTV VMA’s for a reason” on her account. Swift won three awards last night and opened the VMAs.

Lovato wrote on her Instagram Story this afternoon that no, her post was literally about no one. “Btw.. I didn’t ‘shade’ anyone last night. My REASON for not going is because I’m literally living my dream being on Will & Grace rn so stop reaching thaaaaannnnkkssss,” she said.

Lovato teased earlier that day she was working on a surprise project she couldn’t tell fans about just yet. She revealed this morning that project is her role in Will and Grace‘s final season. “Will & Grace & Demi ??‍♀️? @nbcwillandgrace #WillandGrace,” she wrote.

Swift and Lovato are pretty far from close friends. Lovato publicly called out Swift’s political silence in 2016. (Swift has since explained why she didn’t speak out and how she feels remorse for it.) More recently this June, Lovato defended Scooter Braun, her new manager. Swift called Braun out for his “incessant, manipulative bullying” of her when she expressed her disappointment that he acquired her masters with his purchase of her old label Big Machine Record.

Lovato wrote on her Instagram Story, “I have dealt with bad people in this industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man. Personally, I’m grateful that he came into my life when he did. Please stop ‘dragging’ people or bullying them. There’s enough hate in this world as it is. Y’all can come after me all you want but I’m always gonna stay loyal to my team. I value loyalty more than most people in this world and if my name is gonna be brought into conversations I’m gonna stand up for myself and the ones on my team.”
