I Put My Trust (and Hair) in Evan Mock’s Hands

Evan Mock is running his hands through my hair. Technically, he's ruining it. I've done worse things for men.

Mock is the internet’s skater boyfriend. He has the same endearing cockiness of a popular middle schooler, making me the insecure fourteen-year-old girl in this analogy. But Mock is…hot. A modern prince charming with a shit-eating grin, he'll make you blush brighter than his signature hair color, cotton candy pink.

So when the opportunity to hang out with Mock presented itself I was powerless to him smearing hot pink “Poser Paint”—the name of which he found hilarious— on my hair like we were pre-gaming for the Vans Warped Tour. What better way to cut right to the soul of the man himself?

When it’s over, ELLE.com's beauty director Chloe Hall calls my botched dye job “amaaaaazing.” Mock responds the way every teenage girl fears: He boyishly mocks her, and you can’t be 100% sure that you’re in on the joke.

“Anyone who has that many ‘As’ in ‘amazing’ is lying,” he says. But that same confidence is what propelled his career as a multi-hyphenate skater-surfer-model-photographer.

His latest endeavour has him front and center as the star of Calvin Klein's new fragrance, CK EVERYONE. A riff off the iconic CK One, the brand's newest scent is a celebration of self-expression and the pushing of boundaries.

Mock said that modeling the CK campaign for Glen Luchford was a humbling learning experience.

Courtesy of a casual Frank Ocean shoutout, Mock was plucked from Instagram quasi-fame and launched an international fashion career. Within a single year he went from walking the runway to sitting front row to lending his chiseled baby face to campaigns for brands liek Paco Rabanne, MCM, and Louis Vuitton. He calls A$AP Rocky and Hedi Slimane friends, and he recently shot the ads for Justin Bieber's fashion line Drew House.

Casual for a 22-year-old. To sum it up, he’s cooler than you and he knows it.

Read on for bad dad jokes, Mock's favorite smell, and his biggest mistake to date (girl-related, of course).

So what made you decide to go pink to begin with?

It was an impulse, actually. I went green for one day but I changed it. I did it for a magazine. Didn't even really want to, so I changed it back the next day. Actually had a shoot the next day, too.

Have you had any hardships with going platinum? Learn any lessons?

To not wash your hair right before you go out with someone.

Have you learned any other beauty lessons while you've been on set? How did you get your skin so good?

I think I owe it all to my mom, honestly. I don't really do anything. I mean, I put moisturizer on. My sister's always hard on me about doing that. In Hawaii, definitely use sunscreen on the face. But I don't know, I feel like I'm just having fun right now. I could be doing things smarter, but I'm not because I'm young and I'm stupid. I'll never be able to say that again. I don't want to be conservative and do the right thing all the time. Right now, I'm just having fun.

What’s the stupidest mistake you've made?

Stupidest mistake would probably be getting a girlfriend. But like, if I fuck with you, it's kind of an instant connection to where I don't even think about anything else. You don't factor anything in and kind of jump in there. It's like 'You're cool and you're super hot. You want to hang?' Like, 'Alright, let's go to dinner. Like, "Oh, what…week.'

Okay. And then it just happens. But the thing is, I can barely take care of myself. I can't be looking over someone else, and they don't deserve to be on the back burner just chilling. It's different if they're also super busy and always moving as opposed to them just staying at home waiting for me to come home.

So you don't have Valentine's Day plans tomorrow?

I have a date with an airplane. I'm going to London today for more [Calvin Klein press]. The older I get, the more over it I get for holidays. It's cool usually to just hang out with your friends.

You’re the new face of CK EVERYONE. How would you describe its scent?

It actually kind of reminds me of home because it's citrusy. I'm from Hawaii so it kind of just reminds me of being home, which is great because you always want some sort of connection to home, like when you're listening to Hawaiian music. It's hard to find good Hawaiian food. It's not everywhere.

What's your favorite smell? I am shocked at how good my hair looks.

No, this [hair] is fucking atrocious. My favorite smell? My favorite smell ever is right when you get off the plane in Hawaii. Everyone says it, too. They're like, that's crazy. You just land and you smell it. People that have never been there who can say that.

I kind of like how my hair looks really shitty. This is what I was going for.

I don't think it moves. Yeah, I think it's stuck in this helmet. It'd be a good Halloween costume.
