Hulu's Normal People arrived not a moment too soon mid-quarantine. The sensual story of Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal)—two Irish teenagers who fall in and out of love through secondary school and university—dominated everyone's bingeing hours. The show was heralded for its portrayal of believable sex scenes that actually left you hot and bothered. Plus, it spawned a wave of bang haircuts (for better or worse) à la Marianne and an Instagram account for Connell's chain necklace.

But will the 12-episode series continue with a second season? And how would the story progress, given Sally Rooney's novel doesn't have a sequel? Here's everything we know about an unconfirmed follow-up to Normal People. Plus, an update on the very-much-confirmed adaptation of Rooney's Conversations with Friends.

Season 2 has not been confirmed by the show's creative team.

Since premiering on April 29, fans have wondered whether Normal People would get a second season. When The Hollywood Reporter asked series producer Ed Guiney directly about a follow-up, he denied working on season 2. "We're not thinking about a second season at the moment," Guiney he told the outlet. "Maybe in the future at some point in time. What we are doing is the same team are adapting Conversations with Friends, which is Sally's first book. Obviously [it] is a cousin of Normal People in a way, but it's also quite different." He added, "It feels like we tell a very complete story about these characters' lives, and so it's not something we're moving to do. Maybe there's a version of it down the line."

Director Lenny Abrahamson said he'd like to revisit the characters in a decade.

While he may not be actively working on a second season, Abrahamson told Radio Times that he'd be interested in revisiting the maybe-couple in 10 years. “I have a fantasy of doing a kind of ten year seeing where they are in ten years time sort of thing, if I’m not too decrepit at that point,” he told the outlet.

Mescal and Edgar-Jones are open to returning to their characters.

When the two lead actors were asked about returning to their onscreen counterparts, they seemed game. In an interview with NME, Mescal said, “Series one is the book. But we don’t know what’s on the other side. The great thing about these two characters is that their lives continue.”

At the end of the first season, Connell is (seemingly) headed to New York after being invited to join a university's creative writing MFA program. Meanwhile, Marianne has resolved to stay in Dublin, Ireland. But in a departure from the book, that ending is much less definitive—leaving the fate of our central couple up to interpretation. “I think what’s glorious about it is that the book definitely feels final about their lives. They’re still existing in the world somewhere. I think that’s probably a question for Sally and everybody else,” Mescal told Radio Times when asked about a second season. “But I put my hand up and say I’d play Connell until the cows come home.” Edgar-Jones agreed, “Same. Yeah, very much so.”

An adaptation of Rooney's Conversations with Friends is coming next.

While the fate of Normal People season 2 hangs in the balance, an adaptation of Rooney's debut novel is coming to TV. Conversations with Friends is in the works as a series at BBC with the same creative team behind Normal People. Both Guiney and Abrahamson are working alongside Rooney to adapt the 2017 book into a show. The story follows Frances and Bobbi—a pair of Dublin college students with a romantic past whose lives become entangled with married couple Melissa and Nick. When speaking about that project with Hello! magazine, Guiney said, "that's what we'll be turning our attention to next. But maybe down the line we'll come back to Connell and Marianne."
