Ariana Grande may be one of the most nominated female artists at tonight's MTV VMAs, but the singer will not be at the ceremony. Grande is over in Europe, where she performed in Manchester last night for her Sweetener World Tour. Grande will perform in Paris tomorrow, so unsurprisingly, she couldn't fly back to the U.S. for the ceremony, which is in Newark, New Jersey, just outside of New York City.
Grande tweeted when nominations were announced that there was a slim chance she could make it. "i have shows in london the day before and after :/," she wrote.
Page Six reported at the time that MTV was allegedly in a tough place since Grande would not be at the show to physically accept any awards she wins. “MTV likes to give awards to bodies in the building,” a source said. “I think MTV is in a tough spot.” (MTV VMA awards are voted on by fans.)
What awards are Grande up for? Those in the biggest categories: She's up for Video of the Year (for "Thank U, Next"), Artist of the Year, Song of the Year ("Thank U, Next"), and Best Pop Song ("Thank U, Next"), along with Best Hip Hop Song ("Rule the World" by 2 Chainz, which she is featured on), Best Direction (Hannah Lux Davis for Grande's "Thank U, Next" video), Best Visual Effects (Grande's "God Is a Woman" music video), Best Editing ("7 Rings"), Best Art Direction ("7 Rings"), and Best Cinematography ("Thank U, Next").
Grande attended the VMAs last year with her then-fiancé Pete Davidson. Wild how much changes in a year:
