Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2019 MTV VMAs

Selena Gomez teased a busier fall ahead, but it does not start at the MTV VMAs tonight. The singer isn't attending the buzzy award show, which is in Newark, New Jersey this year, right outside of New York City. Gomez does actually have two nominations: one for Best Latin Song for (“I Can’t Get Enough," featuring Benny Blanco, Tainy, and J. Balvin) and one for Best Dance Song (for "Taki Taki" featuring DJ Snake, Cardi B, and Ozuna). But as it's for collaborations she's did, rather than her own solo work, it's understandable why she wouldn't make the trek to the East Coast for the show.

Gomez was last at the VMAs in 2015. She posed with her good friend Taylor Swift on the red carpet:

Swift will be at the VMAs tonight; she's opening the show. Swift reiterated to fans this week how much she loves Gomez when she explained why she wore an easter egg pin of Gomez on her Entertainment Weekly cover. Does it mean anything? "No I just Lov(h)er ??‍♀️," Swift wrote.

Gomez was last seen out last night at Kacey Musgraves' Los Angeles concert with her friends:

Gomez hinted earlier this month that her summer break was coming to an end. She posted some Instagrams from her Italy birthday vacation and wrote, "Sometimes I can’t express how truly grateful I am. Now.. Back to work." Gomez reported to be releasing "very personal" new music soon.

A source told Entertainment Tonight recently that Gomez "is really enjoying this time off before things ramp up again. Selena has been working on new music and plans to release some this year. The new music is going to be a different side of Selena and very personal. Selena has gone through a lot over the years and is ready to share it with the world."
