In a resurfaced video, Will Smith appears to hint at the relationship his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, had with musician August Alsina. The clip, which The Daily Mail says was likely filmed in 2018, shows Smith walking around as he holds a laptop in his other hand. As he looks into the camera, he says:

"Me and Jada was reflecting about love. I asked her, what did she think was the biggest revelations she'd had about love. She said that you cannot make a person happy. And I thought that was a real deep idea. You can make a person smile, you can make a person feel good, you can make a person laugh, but whether or not a person is happy is deeply and totally and utterly out of your control. I remember the day I retired. I literally said to Jada, 'That's it. I retire. I retire from trying to make you happy. I need to go make yourself happy and just prove to me that it's even possible.'And after we cracked the hell up, we started talking about we came into this fault romantic concept that somehow when we got married that we would become one. And what we realized is that we were two completely separate people on two completely separate individual journeys and that we were choosing to walk our separate journeys together. But her happiness was her responsibility, and my happiness was my responsibility. And we decided that we were gonna find our individual, internal, private, separate joy, and then we were gonna present ourselves to the relationship and to each other already happy. Not coming to each other, begging with out cups out, demanding that she fill my cup and demanding that she meet my needs. It's unfair and it's unrealistic and can be destructive to place the responsibility for your happiness on anybody but yourself."

On Friday, Pinkett-Smith took herself to the Red Table, as she had promised following Alsina's interview with The Breakfast Club's Angela Yee.

"It was about four and half, four years ago that I started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends. And it all started with him just needing some help. Me wanting to help his health, his mental state. From there you and I were going through a difficult time. We basically…we broke up," Pinkett-Smith said to Smith, who sat across the table from her.

She also addressed Alsina's remark that Smith had given his "blessing" for the relationship to take place. "One thing I want clean up that was swirling about in the press is about you giving permission…the only person that can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself," declared Pinkett-Smith during the conversation. "But what August was probably trying to communicate—because I could actually see how he could have perceived it as permission because we were separated amicably—and I also think he wanted to make it clear he was not a home wrecker, which he's not."

In the interview, the Smiths concluded that they had done a lot of work to heal from their past pain and to get to a solid place in their relationship.
